I’m Matthew Sampson
I am a U.S. Marine Scout Sniper with well over 3,000 days in war zones across Iraq, Afghanistan, and Ukraine. In Ukraine, I have now spent 753 days on the ground, including 635 days as the commander of a special operations team conducting combat operations on the front lines and behind enemy lines.
For almost four years, I have been in this fight. First with a rifle in my hands. Now with my voice.
Ukraine is still standing, still adapting, and still fighting. I have seen the cost up close. I have also seen the opportunity: better training, better strategy, stronger partnership, and a clearer understanding of what this war means not only for Ukraine, but for the United States and the free world.
My mission now is to bring ground truth to the people who need to hear it most — lawmakers, journalists, veterans, and citizens — and to keep fighting for freedom in the way the moment demands.
The fight is not over for them. It is not over for us. And it is not over for me.

What to Understand Right Now
This is no longer a traditional war. Drones now dominate much of the battlefield, with reported drone-inflicted casualties rising from under 10% in 2022 to as much as 80% last year.
Casualty evacuation can be delayed for weeks. In some sectors, troops can remain in position for multiple weeks, and in one reported case for as long as 44 days, often waiting for fog, rain, or other bad weather to reduce drone activity.
Ukraine has already shifted into an 18-corps force. That is a major structural change aimed at improving battlefield cohesion, coordination, and reserve formation.
Russia is still feeding the war with money and pressure. Based on my reporting, Russian recruits are being offered roughly $20,000 if signing from prison, roughly $40,000 if signing outside prison, and as much as $80,000 in places such as the Moscow and Saint Petersburg regions.
I Hate a Bully, And I Won’t Back Down
I’ve always believed in standing up to bullies. It’s a principle I’ve carried with me through every battlefield, and it’s what led me to Ukraine.
For over 600 days, I fought shoulder to shoulder with Ukrainian defenders—ordinary people thrust into an extraordinary hell. Farmers, teachers, fathers, daughters—forced to become warriors in a war they never asked for. I’ve seen children who should be laughing in schoolyards instead trembling in basements, praying the next missile doesn’t find their home.
I’ve fought in the trenches—cold, wet, rat-infested trenches that haven’t changed much since World War I. I’ve battled through the ruins of Bakhmut, a city that once held over 70,000 people—now reduced to rubble and ash. The place is unrecognizable. There’s no city left—just bones of buildings and memories scorched into the earth.
This war isn’t just about territory. It’s about erasure. Russia isn’t trying to win hearts and minds—they’re trying to wipe an entire identity off the map. Their language, their culture, their spirit—everything the Ukrainian people hold sacred is under assault. And yet, they fight. With resolve. With grit. With a kind of courage that can’t be broken.
I’m not alone in this fight. What many Americans don’t realize is the number of U.S. volunteers who have answered the call to stand beside the Ukrainian people. We are out there, putting our lives on the line, but we don’t have the resources we need to be as effective as we could be. Through the help of NGOs and generous donors, we’ve been outfitting ourselves, but what we really need is a full-scale, committed effort from the U.S. and the global community.
We need proper equipment. We need advanced training. We need the financial backing to make sure that our teams are equipped to meet the enemy head-on, in the most brutal and unforgiving conditions. This fight is not just for Ukraine—it’s for the values we hold dear. And to win, we need you, the American people, to demand that your elected officials step up, increase support, and ensure that we have what it takes to make a real difference on the frontlines.
Support the Cause – Your Help Matters
I’m now back in the U.S., working to share my experiences with lawmakers, advocates, and citizens. Along this journey, I’ve been lucky enough to meet so many Americans who believe in what I’m doing, and their support has been nothing short of inspiring.
But there’s more work to be done, and I need your help. It takes resources—time, energy, and yes, money—to connect with the people who can make a difference. If you believe in this cause, if you’ve been moved by the fight for freedom and justice, please consider contributing. Every donation helps me travel to key locations, meet the people who can push change, and continue to amplify the voices of those fighting for their lives in Ukraine.
I’m asking you to help fuel this mission—whether it’s a small donation or a connection to someone who can make a difference. Your support will make a real impact on the ground.
